Moving to Las Vegas With a Section 8 Voucher: How Portability Works

Section 8 vouchers aren’t tied to one city. Portability lets you move with your Housing Choice Voucher to another housing authority’s area, and Las Vegas is a common destination. Here is how porting into Las Vegas works, what slows it down, and how to find a place quickly once you land.

Who handles your voucher in Las Vegas

The Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority (SNRHA) runs the voucher program for all of Clark County: Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, and unincorporated areas. When you port to Las Vegas, SNRHA becomes your receiving housing authority. Your current agency is the initial housing authority.

Step by step: porting a voucher to Las Vegas

1. Check that you can move now

Talk to your current housing specialist first. Common hold-ups:

  • The 12-month rule. If you didn’t live in your initial housing authority’s area when you applied, it may require you to lease there for 12 months before porting.
  • Your lease. If you’re mid-lease in a voucher unit, you usually need your landlord’s agreement to end it or an allowed reason to move.
  • Good standing. Unpaid balances or program violations can block a move.

2. Ask your current housing authority to start portability

Tell them you want to port to SNRHA in Clark County, Nevada. They’ll confirm your eligibility, update your income if needed, and prepare the portability packet (HUD form 52665 plus your family’s file).

3. Your current housing authority sends the file to SNRHA

This part is out of your hands, and it’s the step to follow up on. SNRHA states that your current housing authority must email or mail your portability documents before you arrive in Clark County. SNRHA does not accept hand-delivered paperwork. After the file arrives, SNRHA asks you to allow about 14 days for review and to schedule your briefing.

4. Attend SNRHA’s briefing and get your voucher

SNRHA briefs you on its local rules and issues a voucher for your Clark County search. Under federal rules, the voucher SNRHA issues can’t expire earlier than 30 days after your original voucher’s expiration date. Check the date printed on it and start touring the same week.

5. Find a unit and submit the RTA

Once you pick a unit, you and the landlord submit the Request for Tenancy Approval (RTA) to SNRHA. SNRHA reviews the rent, inspects the unit, and signs the HAP contract with the landlord. Our Section 8 approval process guide walks through each of those steps and how long they take.

Your budget changes when you port

After you port, SNRHA’s payment standards apply, not your old agency’s. That can raise or lower what your voucher covers. For 2026:

Voucher size SNRHA payment standard
Studio $1,381
1 bedroom $1,550
2 bedroom $1,838
3 bedroom $2,575

The full table, how your share is calculated, and the 40% rule are in Las Vegas Section 8 payment standards 2026.

Tips that save weeks

  • Get the send date in writing. Ask your initial housing authority to email you when the packet goes to SNRHA, then call SNRHA at (702) 477-3100 to confirm it arrived.
  • Line up units before you arrive. You can’t submit an RTA until SNRHA issues your voucher, but you can shortlist voucher-friendly landlords and tour by video.
  • Pack your documents. Bring ID for every adult, Social Security cards, income proof, and your current voucher paperwork.
  • Learn the neighborhoods. Our comparison of Strip-area vs. downtown Las Vegas apartments helps if you’re new to the city.
